Frequently asked questions
Is the redacted text really removed?
Yes. On download, every page with a redaction is rebuilt as an image with the area painted out. The original text is not in the downloaded file.
What is the cost of doing it that way?
A redacted page becomes an image, so the rest of the text on that page can no longer be selected or searched. Pages without a redaction are unchanged.
How is this different from the Cover tool?
Cover paints a block over content and leaves the content in the file. It is fine for tidying a page and it is not redaction. Use Redact permanently when the content must not be recoverable.
Can I undo a redaction?
While you are editing, yes. Once you download, the redacted copy cannot be reversed. Your original upload is not changed.
Does it remove hidden data such as the author or comments?
It removes what you select on the page. The download is a newly built file that keeps the document's title and drops its author, subject and keywords. Comments and attachments on other pages are not touched, so check those pages too.
Which documents may I redact?
Documents you own or are authorized to modify. Redaction is for protecting private information, not for changing what a record says.
